Sound stopped working suddenly

$

The sound on my laptop stopped working suddenly . It had been working fine for about 1 year since I upgraded to Windows 10 .

It says "No output device is installed " under playback devices .

But the IDT high definition Audio Codec shows up in Device Manager . If I tried to update driver, it fails .

I can hear audio if I connect an external sound card , but not just regular headphones or from the laptop's speaker .

When i tried Troubleshooting , it failed with the error code 0x80131018

I have already tried all steps recommended by HP Support Assitant .

Even tried Restting the laptop (all applications were deleted , but files restored) , but still no sound .

Hi @Arubix,

Welcome to the HP Forums!Smiley Happy It is a terrific place to find answers and tips! For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide. First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. What is your precise model of Envy Touchsmart Sleekbook 4 do you have? HP Notebook PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number, Serial Number or Product Number?

I grasp that you have lost the sound on your notebook. If you connect an external sound card it works. Here is a link that should help.

HP Notebook PCs - No Sound or Distorted Sound from Speakers (Windows 10). You  could also try installing the generic audio driver.

  • Open Device Manager
  • Right-click on the audio driver and choose update driver
  • Browse my Computer for driver software
  • Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
  • Select High Definition Audio Device  and click next and follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Please let me know if this helped.

Dear Customer,

We do not find the audio drivers for win 10 on the HP website for this model

However, you could still use win 8.1 audio drivers

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5409278&swItemId=ob_130088_1&swEnvOid=4158#tab-history

if the issue is still the same , then,

  1. Select IDT High Definition Audio CODEC on Device Manager.
  2. Select Driver tab.
  3. Click Update Driver... button.
  4. Select  -> Browse my computer for driver software.
  5. Select -> Let me pickup a list of device drivers on my computer.
  6. Select  High Definition Audio Device(Not  IDT High Def...  this is important.) and click Next.

Appears Warning message, but reply Yes.

  1. ! Windows has successfully update your driver software.

Key is step 6.

Welcome @sk30,

I read your post and looked at the screenshots you had provided. I understand that you are having an issue with both an internal and external microphone. I would be happy to assist you. I just need your Model Number (How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?). Once I have the proper information I can find out all of the specifications of your Notebook.

In the meantime, have you tried performing a hard reset.  When performing a hard reset please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices.

Is the microphone and headset integrated or are they separate pieces of equipment?

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers?

Does it work in any program?

Have you tried to use the troubleshooting tool?

Did you raise the Microphone volume level?

Have you tried a system restore back to a time when it was working?

Have you done Windows Updates?

Have you done updates with the HP Support Assistant?

Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that need updating.

Here is a document for you called Resolving Microphone Problems - Use the following steps to test, check hardware and connections, update audio drivers, and configure Windows sound settings.

Here is a document from Microsoft called Troubleshooting in Windows and another called Using Automated Troubleshooting from Microsoft.

If this post helps you to resolve the issue, please pay it forward by clicking "Accept as Solution", to the right of the Thumbs up icon. You can click the thumbs up icon to show gratitude!

Please re-post and let me know the detailed results of the troubleshooting steps provided, the answers to the questions above.

Thank you for joining in!

Have a great day!

Absolutely agree with the person who said their Toshiba laptop's Harman Kardon speakers have better sound. My 6-year-old Toshiba Satellite has vastly better sound, including bass, than this new HP Spectre 360 laptop I just bought. Bang &

OIufsen could learn a thing or two from Harman Kardon. I bought two HP Spectres and both have the same horrible tinny sound. Sounds like you're living in a tin can. Reinstalling drivers, BIOS, and then the operating system did NOTHING. After reading other reviews that talk about crappy sound from HP's B&O speakers, I'm thinking this is an overall quality issue. This laptop is destined to go back to Best Buy. I'll look for another Toshiba.

Having the same issue with at least 2 ProBook 650 G1. It is strange that HP suppor keeps silent for so long.
