Hi,
There are generally 2 types of volume On-screen display for HP notebooks - the first is installed by HP MediaSmart SmartMenu and looks like a solid blue bar, the 2nd is a general OSD display that looks like a series of graduated vertical bars.
As your machine shipped with MediaSmart software, the first utility should be the one you require, however it can be problematic getting this to reinstall correctly.
Try the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features and look for an entry titled HP MediaSmart SmartMenu - if it's listed, right click the entry and select Uninstall.
When complete, restart the notebook.
When windows has reloaded, download and install the alternative SmartMenu package on the following link.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45140.exe
Again, when this installation has completed, restart the notebook again before checking.
