Thanks so much everyone for trying to help us get this fixed.
Taking apart the cover did fix both the mic and the webcam. I tried all the software changes, updated the drivers and followed the threads and to believe that it was actually a physical failure. Thanks for your help Schwasted.
One thing I wanted to add was that when I first got the laptop I noticed that there was a pinging sound whenever the screen moved. I now realize this was due to the wedcam and mic disconnecting and reconnecting.
My notebook is the Pavilon dv7.

I am have the solution for the webcam. The cord that connects it doesnt hold into the port well. You need to pop off the plastic that surrounds your screen at the top where the webcam is and to the right of the camera when looking directly at your screen you will see where it plugs in. just push it back in and it will work. Also know that it will keep coming loose and get disconnected from time to time. I use my drivers license or a credit card and just pop the top portion off and that is sufficient enough to make it happen.
