HP Envy TouchSmart 15-j013ea - Headphones excessively loud

The laptops speakers work fine, but when you plug headphones into the laptop the sound is extremely loud. I've tried changing defaults on the speakers/headphones and troubleshooting and volume mixers etc, I've also updated the IDT audio drivers. Audio on this laptop is like a constant balancing act, is there anyting I can do?
