sound no longer works ...

I have an HP Envy 15, which I bought a couple of years ago so my warranty is no longer available.

A couple of months ago my sound stopped working. The computer will show that the audio is working, but no sound comes out of the speakers or audio jack. I have uninstalled/reinstalled audio drivers and I have had McAfee Tech Masters take a look (they could not find any software issues and believe that it must be a hardware issue). McAfee recommended replacing the sound card, but I have no idea how to know which one to buy or how to install it. (...If that is even the issue)

Within the last few weeks my laptop has been overheating and the battery drains within an hour if not plugged in. I'm not sure if any of these issues are related.

When I turn on my laptop, the majority of the time I will get a message saying that HP CoolSense has shut down my computer due to temperature issues ... but the laptop had already been manually powered off, it never shut down by itself, so I am unsure why  I would get this message.

I am a student so sending my computer away to be fixed isn't an option. I'm debating on whether or not I should just go and get an Apple. I'm hoping this can be fixed because I love Windows 7 and do not want to buy a new laptop that runs on Windows 8.

Any help/suggestions would be very much appreciated!
