An alternate power source could be a different AC Adapter (if you have one), a backup battery (again, if you have one). Sometimes having the AC cord plugged into a surge protector, where a fluorescent lamp is plugged in can get some audible feedback. You should try different wall outlets as well.
Restarting your computer is a valuable troubleshooting step, I recommend you try it if you haven't.
