How do I mute the long (normal) sound my laptop makes as it comes on?

A minute or so after I push the on button on my HP laptop, a big loud, long sound indicates it is ready, something like you'd hear in an animated cartoon on television.  It's disturbing and annoying. I have Windows 7. It wasn't always this loud.
