Hi TheBigBoy, welcome to the HP Forums. If you lose sound once Windows starts, it could theoretically be something on startup causing the issue. First perform a clean boot using this method: How to perform a clean boot in Windows
If you cannot recreate the audio cutting out, then something you disabled on startup was causing the issue. You can then systematically add half the items back to startup tab, and restart to see if it comes back. Once you identify the item causing the issue you can let me know.
However if the issue persists on a clean boot, the next thing is to restore the original audio drivers using this method:
Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 7)
Let me know how it turns out.
