Usually external means something that is attached to the notebook, like an external mouse or an external hard drive that sort of thing.
If everything you plug works fine but not the speakers then it isn't an issue with the sound card or your drivers. It will be a hardware issue with your speakers. I would recommend that you call HP Total Care at 1-800-474-6836 in North America or if you live outside of North America use this link.
