sound plays through laptop speaker when head phones are connected how do I resolve this?

I have an HP pavillion g6 notebook. The sound comes through the  notebook speakers when headphones are connected.

My son uses the same headphone on his Toshiba notebook and it works

Help . My neighbours are complaining about loud  music coming from my apartment.
