Hi Cathy,
Welcome to the HP Forum.
Well, Rats. Not a great way to start out. This is unusual, but it can happen.
It is likely that the Updates are OK and the sound is just "tangled", but you might be able to back out of the whole thing and be done with it for now.
HP Updates should have provided a Restore Point just before installing the updates.
Before you check on the Restore Point, Open the HP Support Assistant> Click on Settings (maybe along the top ribbon) > and in that first "bubble box" drop-menu, Select
Check for Updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them
Click "Save" and then exit the program
Next, see if you can "back out" to when the computer was still working the way you liked it.
See if you can "go back in time" to before the Updates were applied.
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8)
That may do it.
If not, then the Sound may just be tangled, so try this:
- Create a Restore Point Create a Restore Point – Win7 OR Create a restore point Win8
- Close all your programs and Shut down the computer
- Disconnect everything (little Unifier for the keyboard / external mouse can stay)
- Perform the Hard Reset for your notebook model
- Boot the computer and log in
Reminder: Hard Reset is just a device Reset. The Hard Reset procedure does notwipe out your files nor does it destroy your Windows setup in any way. It just "clears the cobwebs". Depending on the cause of the problem, this kind of "reset" can fix a variety of computer glitches.

If still no joy, then the sound may still be OK but the settings may have been messed up, so try going through the testing:
Notebooks - No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8)

I hope that helps!

It is a nice way to say “Thank You" for the help.
