Hi and thank you Mark.  It helps to understand that this is  a forum with many knowledgable people willing to help others  :-)  I was truly hoping that the problem would be resolved differently but at least the workaround will do for now.  IDT really did run fine until the restart after updates.  When I performed the start-F2 audio diagnostics and heard sound I knew it wasn't my audio that was the problem and most likely a Microsoft issue, especially with the error 52 in the general tab in device mgr. after the update.   I had a live chat with a Microsoft rep that told me to contact the mfg as it was a device problem.  I now have 6 downloads of the same driver... lol.  Funny thing was it truly does/did say that the digital signature was not valid so my thinking went back to something to do with the updates.  Then upon more searching I found how to make it so windows 8 would load the driver without a valid signature and voila... sound, beautiful sound !!!  Now all it says in device mgr is "this device is working properly".  I do regular maintenance and did run all the diagnostic tests and everything passes on my notebook.  Thank you for all your help and Kudo's to you for being a willing participant on this forum !!!  Thank you and I too am very happy that everything is running smoothly now.
