Theosis,

You are welcome; I am glad it is fixed.

                                                         Protecting your Data

Everyone knows that you should create your Recovery Discs when you receive your new computer.

Not everyone does it.

One thing you can do to help yourself in the event of a system emergency is to create an Image of your computer's disk that you can use if your current configuration is mangled by "one more game", is damaged by malware, or is corrupted in any way.

Backing up your files can save you from the headache of losing important information on your computer. Use this document to learn how to back up your files in Windows 7.

Keep your backups current by attaching an external drive or USB stick to your computer and putting your backups on a schedule.  Once in a while, make a new Image.

                                                                             Protecting your Access

  • There are two kinds of people who use computers:

  1. Those who have been locked out of their accounts and computers
  2. Those who will, sometime in the future, be locked out of their accounts and computers

Create an extra account on your system that has administrator privileges.  Assign the password as a LOCAL password – and create that password as complex and clever as it takes to make it secure.  Use at least eight characters, letters, and numbers for the password. Do NOT use words in ANY language and Mix Upper and Lower case characters.  Write down that password and keep it somewhere safe where you will always be able to find it.  Do not use the account except to log into it on occasion to make sure you can do so.  Keep the account on the system and make sure it is part of your backups.

Why should you do this?  So you will not be one of the people who must write in to the forum and say, “I am locked out of my computer.  I only have one account.  I cannot log in.  Please help me.”

If you have another account on your computer, it is much easier to save yourself when things go sideways.  You may still have to ask for help; the recovery will be quicker and less painful.
