Hi there Lil_Lisa
And thank you for your reply - but I've already been through these steps.
To be clear about exactly what the problem is, my laptop's internal speakers stopped working about 3 months ago. There was a clicking sound from the speakers and then nothing. (As far as I know this did not result from a Windows 7 or HP software update.) Quite by chance I found that, if I plugged my earphones into any of the 3 sockets on the left side of the laptop, sound was restored to the internal speakers. Pull the earphones and the internal speakers stop.
Several other HP Pavillion owners have reported the same fault on this site, so it is CLEARLY an HP-specific software fault.
When I switch on my laptop (without earphones plugged in!) I hear the Windows startup music and within 30 seconds to 1 minute of startup, the internal spealkers emit a clicking sound and then stop working. (I managed to load itunes immediately on startup recently and got the speakers to play the first few bars of a song before they stopped working!) On every occasion when I then plug in my earphones, internal speaker sound is restored.
I've now spent many hours trying to solve the problem, working through all the various advice notes and instructions available from this site. I am NOT a computer expert but a colleague at work (IT Director) IS: he has 35 years' experience of system hardware support and software development. Last week we spent 3 hours working together on the problem and it defeated him.
I am now really fed up that an expensive laptop, less than 2 years old, is not fit for purpose. ANY help or advice you can give me would be very much appreciated.
Thanks and Regards
DJWhit.
